TD Ameritrade has been around for more than 35 years, and has solidified a reputation as one of the best, if not the best option for self-directed investors and traders. They placed just a small fraction of a point behind the #1 rated broker (TradeStation) in Barron’s 2011 review. With the recent platform integration of last years #1 ranked brokerage (thinkorswim), we fully expect them to be sitting in the top spot next year.
What they offer: State-of-the-art tools for casual investors and professionals, $9.99 trades, the most advanced options trading platform on the market, independent research, exceptional customer service.

How they compare: There are cheaper brokers out there, but going with one of them will mean sacrificing a bit in one form or another. TD Ameritrade excels because of their excellent trade experience, wide range of products to trade, and customer service reputation. If you’re price shopping, check out OptionsHouse or TradeKing (both are relatively close substitutes – cheaper but don’t offer as wide range of products). If you’re a pro and want direct market access, MB Trading and Interactive Brokers are solid alternatives.
The Verdict: You won’t be disappointed. With the aquisition of thinkorswim, TD Ameritrade is arguably the force to be reckoned with in the discount broker space. They get high marks across the board, except for price.

The Final Word…
All around, TD Ameritrade is a very solid pick. If you want to go cheaper, you’ll have to sacrifice either on range of investment products or customer service and usability. Now that they’ve picked up thinkorswim, we think they are poised to take a big piece of the market for casual investors and professional traders alike. If they lowered their price a touch, they could pose a serious threat to other discount brokers.
